Students across all year groups at Alsager School participated in the mass annual celebration that encourages us all to enjoy, discover and share poetry.
Throughout National Poetry Day 2020 (1 October), teachers of all subjects shared their favourite poems with students and explored poems relevant to their subject, such as 'In Flanders Fields' in History, 'Romance de la Luna' in Spanish, 'Future Visions' in Science and 'Pi Poem' in Maths.
Art teachers selected poems inspired by art, like Anne Sexton's 'The Starry Night' (based on Van Gogh's 1889 painting of the same name) and Kennedy's 'Nude Descending a Staircase' (Duchamp, 1912).
In English, students analysed poetry and looked at how it has inspired other writers, such as Maya Angelou borrowing 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' from Paul Lawrence Dunbar's poem 'Sympathy'.
In form time, students read Keats and Wordsworth from the Literary Canon alongside newly published poets, Victoria Adukwei Bulley and Marvin Thompson.
Students also explored poetry as a creative outlet by writing their own poems.
