United Utilities have repaired a sewer which caused a significant sinkhole problem in Alsager, but found difficulties in establishing what created the issue.

Cllr June Buckley, a ward councillor for Alsager, previously stated the town had been blighted by a problem with the roads deteriorating for months.

With plans for the town's public realm project progressing, Cllr Buckley's major concern was the state of the sewer running under the town's high street.

Cllr Buckley continued: "I feel that once we are underway and have got the scheme [public realm] approved, we need to contact United Utilities and find out exactly what they are going to do about that sewer.

"Because it would be tragic if we got this wonderful scheme done and then we started getting the sinkholes or even worst they [United Utilities] rocked up and 18 months later they had to dig up the road and put a new sewer in."

However, a spokesperson for Cheshire East Council has told Nub News that United Utilities have accepted responsibility for the sinkhole repairs.

The spokesperson added that any cost Cheshire East had incurred investigating the sinkhole would be repaid by the water company.

A spokesperson for United Utilities told Nub News: "We're aware that the hole in Crewe Road, Alsager, has caused local residents considerable inconvenience and we would like to apologise for our part in that.

"It has been difficult to identify what created the hole and whether damage to our sewer pipe caused the hole or the other way around.

"We have now repaired our sewer, reinstated the road and the temporary traffic lights have been removed."

However, Nub News has been informed that the temporary traffic lights remain in place on Crewe Road.
