Pupils at an Alsager primary school have a top-of-the-range outside track to exercise on – thanks to a local businessman pioneering the importance of exercise in schools.

Ian Donaldson's two sons, Harry and Louis, both now grown-up, were pupils at Alsager Highfields Primary School.

Mr Donaldson, Chief Executive Officer of Staffordshire-based  Atlanta Group, lives in the town and is an ambassador keeping exercise alive in education.

He donated a bumper £10,400 to ensure that the school's 'Daily Mile' could be built and opened ready for the new school term.

Mr Donaldson said: "It's so important for all children to have access to good facilities.

"Exercise plays a vital role in a child's learning and it's clear that the exercise facility has been welcomed by pupils and they enjoy using it."

The 'Daily Mile' has a hardcore base and permeable edging, meaning it can be used in all weathers.

Added to this, pupils at the school have been given smart new PE tops to ensure they can exercise in style.

Ten-year-old Ben says the new trail helps him to get in his daily steps.

"We have so much compared to other schools. It's fantastic," commented Willow.

Shadrach (10) is also a big fan of the new 'Daily Mile' which he described as "absolutely brilliant".

Rachel Woollam, Headteacher Alsager Highfields Primary School, thanked Mr Donaldson for his contribution.

She said: "We're so grateful for Mr Donaldson's contribution which added to our fundraising for the project. A healthy body is a healthy mind."
