The Alsager branch of the Royal British Legion is launching a monthly coffee morning to help people in the town combat loneliness and show them how the RBL can help them.

Branch and membership secretary, Jill Margett, realised there was a need to get people together and offer them a space to chat and meet others after chatting to people during the last Poppy appeal.

Now the branch is launching a coffee morning with free hot drinks and biscuits on the third Wednesday of the month between 10 am and 12 pm at Alsager Civic.

And the first one takes place this Wednesday (March 16th) and Jill Margett is hoping for a big turnout.

Jill said: "The coffee morning isn't about fundraising (although any donations will be very welcome) - it is more about awareness – awareness of how the RBL can help the community.

"During the last Poppy Appeal, I was chatting with a lovely lady. It was during this chat that she told me of how she was a carer for her husband who suffers with dementia. She told me that she struggles at times.

"Her husband is a veteran and so I asked her if she had thought of asking the RBL for help. This lady was completely shocked and said that she'd never even thought of asking.

"Year after year she donated to the Poppy Appeal and hadn't realised that she was eligible for help.

"This really got me thinking about how many others in our community were unaware of how the RBL could provide assistance during difficult times.

"It might be a regular phone call, hospital visits or financial support.

"Many people only think of the RBL during the Poppy Appeal but as a branch we decided that we want them to be aware of us throughout the year, not asking for donations but giving back to our wonderfully generous town and surrounding areas.

"The Royal British Legion is here to help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans, and their families. And we're not going anywhere.

"Our support starts after one day of service and continues through life, long after service is over.

"The Alsager Branch greatly values the incredible support given by the local area and we look forward to seeing you for a cuppa and a biscuit."

Alsager Pharmacy will be showing what services are on offer such as free prescription delivery, blood pressure testing and pre-packed medications.

They will also have information on the MENTELL -which provides online circles for men aged 18+ to talk in a safe and confidential space, free from advice and judgement, which is especially relevant for many veterans.
