Councillor presses for the council to solve a long-standing flooding problem on Linley Lane
An Alsager councillor is pressing for action to the road to stop flooding under the railway bridge near the new Sainsbury's superstore in the town.
Councillor Rod Fletcher asked Cheshire East Council a question about when it would use the money which Sainsbury;s had given them as part of the section 106 agreement as part of the planning approval.
But he says a reply from the head of highways at Cheshire East Council has led him to wonder whether the work is pencilled in and whether 106 monies would be used to solve the flooding.
Alsager Nub News has written several stories about the flooding problem under the railway bridge at Linley Lane, uding one last January here about the Turners who had to flee their 120-year-old flooded cottage for the third time.
Cllr Fletcher is concerned that he is not aware of any firm commitment for the work despite the store being opening later this month (February).
Cllr Fletcher said: "Flooding has happened for very many years on Linley Lane under the Railway Bridge.
"Sainsbury's has taken remedial action on land in their ownership. They also identified a drainage problem on Linley Lane and advised Cheshire East Highways what the issue was.
Cllr Fletcher says he has had a response from the head of highways which said they were aware of the problem.
The reply said: "Highways are aware of previous flooding and drainage issues at Linley Lane, Alsager.
"Works by Sainsbury's on maintaining a nearby culvert has assisted with drainage. Highways have not received any emergency calls recently.
"The Council has received a number of different s106 planning monies for the purpose of footway works, pedestrian crossing alterations, local highway works and traffic and transportation impacts arising from development.
"Highways are considering how they may best use these to provide a solution that is protected by also addressing drainage issues."
Sainsbury's planning application for the new store included a S106 agreement including:
- a contribution of £100,000 towards a bus service;
- £100,000 towards footway widening works along Linley Lane;
- £200,000 towards junction improvement works at Linley Lane / B5077;
- £100,000 towards highway improvement works in the local area.
