A book about Alsager's fallen heroes in WWI has been written and released by a local war historian who has received a BEM for his work.

Former Grenadier Guard, Harry Carlisle, one of the founder members of the Cheshire Villages Great War Society, spent several months researching for the book.

The result is 'Alsager War Memorial – 1914 – 1919' which details every soldier appearing on the town's War Memorial.

Every soldier listed on the cenotaph is featured in the book.

Harry used a variety of sources including the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, WFA Pension Records and Census returns, for his pain-staking research.

And on Saturday (November 5th), visitors got the chance to see the book along with a variety of other artefacts at a special exhibition at the Civic Centre.

Nicola Cook, Royal British Legion's Assistant Director of Operations, officially open the exhibition

Harry said: "It was our 33rd exhibition and we were very pleased with how it went."

The exhibition detailed the efforts of Alsager and surrounding villages including Rode Heath, Odd Rode, Church Lawton and Barthomley.

And it also featured displays by local schools including Excalibur Primary School, Cranberry Academy and Rode Heath School.

The event was organised by the Cheshire Villages Great War Society and the Alsager branch of the RBL and was officially opened by Nicola Cook, the Royal British Legion's Assistant Director of Operations.

It featured displays by a variety of organisations and groups including the Apedale Valley Light Railway, two of whose members, Rob Watling and Richard Sellers-Smith dressed in period army uniform.
