Some train services were replaced by replacement buses today (Monday) to allow repairs to be carried out on the track at Alsager following maintenance work.

And rail bosses are urging passengers to check first before they travel in case services are changed.

Buses replaced trains between Stoke-on-Trent, Crewe and Derby this morning due to the work.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "During maintenance work our team identified an issue with the ground condition under the track at Alsager.

"Our engineers are onsite assessing the track and ground conditions currently but it is too early to say whether this is due to storm weather.

"We would ask passengers to check before they travel with national rail enquiries as some services may be cancelled, diverted or by rail replacement bus.

"Sorry to passenger journeys impacted by this today while we work on getting the line reopened."
