UP CLOSE: Wild Rumpus based at Lunts Moss at Scholar Green near Alsager is an amazing outdoor resource. We catch up with Alana Jones who has started a weekly outdoor boot camp – come rain or shine!

It's 10.30 am on a Saturday morning. There's sleet and hail pounding down outside, funky music blasting out and a class is going through their weekly workout.

There's smiles all round and suddenly a timer goes off and the five or so people taking part run outside, one after the other, to carry on their class in the wonderful woodland.

The enthusiasm on the faces of the class members as they run back into the wooden outdoor structure designed and built by Wild Rumpus's design team and exhibited at the 'Love it for Longer' exhibition at Chester Zoo, is clear.

Star jumps and all kinds of other exercises follow with breaks in between to allow the class to catch their breath and get a sip of water to keep hydrated during the fun class.

Yoga mats are rolled out and the class, which costs just £5 a week, continues doing all kinds of workouts on the mat, pulling and pumping muscles and following clear instructions from their instructor.

This is exercise with nature and it's proving a big hit with exercise fans and nature lovers alike who would rather workout in the woodland than go to a class inside a gym.

Actor, director, voice over artist and street performer Michael Imerson, from Scholar Green, is one of the regulars at the boot camp class which began two weeks' ago.

He said: "It's great to be outside and not in an enclosed gym which can sometimes feel a bit sterile.

"The class is a great start to the weekend and helps you to get fit but in a nice, friendly environment. It's great fun."

Fellow class member, student Ellie Gibbs, who is studying at Keele University, loves the weekly classes.

She said: "It's fabulous to dip into nature and exercise at the same time. It's a great class."

The weekly boot camp, featured in our What's On Guide last week

here., is run by venue manager, Alana Jones. A dancer and circus tight-rope walker, Alana knows a thing or two about exercise and says she tapers the classes to those attending. "It's all about having fun and dipping into nature. As it's outside, we ask people to wear lots of warm layers, suitable footwear and bring a waterproof jacket or top. "We're running the classes on Saturdays but this may change to mid-week and in the evening in April when the days get lighter, depending on demand. "We don't know yet - we're just seeing how it goes. It's such a great way to combine exercise and nature." "The Wild Bootcamp in The Woods" takes place on Saturdays from 10.30am – 11.30 am. A link can be found here.
