Train services were disrupted and British Transport Police were called after a person was hit by a train in Alsager.

British Transport Police say officers were called to the line in Alsager at 6.33pm last night (October 24th), following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

A spokesperson said: "Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

British Transport Police have not released the exact location of the incident on the Alsager line.

Rail services on the East Midlands Railway between Nottingham and Crewe and the London Northwestern Railway between Birmingham New Street and Crewe were suspended for a number of hours last night and rail replacement buses laid on.

The line was finally cleared and reopened at 11.06 pm last night.

A National Rail spokesman said yesterday: "Whilst the emergency services carry out their work, all lines between these stations will be closed.

"Trains will be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised."
