Lawton Dental Care is encouraging local residents to take a more proactive approach to their health, showing how small steps today can prevent bigger problems in the future.

For many of us, visiting a dentist is simply part of our routine. We attend our checkups, look after our teeth and assume that if nothing hurts, everything must be fine.

But at Lawton Dental Care in Alsager, the team are encouraging patients to think beyond their next appointment and consider how they can protect their natural teeth for the future.

Thinking beyond the next check-up

It is easy to assume that if nothing hurts everything must be fine. However, some dental problems can develop quietly over time only becoming noticeable when more invasive treatment is needed.

Dr Matt Gilks, dentist and owner of Lawton Dental Care explained: "We often see patients who attend their routine appointments and take excellent care of their teeth, but who have older, larger fillings that may leave the remaining natural tooth more vulnerable to cracks and fractures.

"These problems are not always obvious to the patient, which is why we believe it is important to look at the long-term health of a tooth, not just whether it is causing discomfort."

From firefighting to future-proofing

Traditionally, dentistry has often been reactive - a tooth hurts, a filling breaks or a problem develops, and treatment follows. While this is sometimes unavoidable, a preventative approach offers an opportunity to think ahead.

The team at Lawton Dental Care believe modern dentistry should be as much about protecting teeth as it is about repairing them.

"Where we spot that a tooth may be at risk, we can provide porcelain, laboratorymade restorations such as inlays or crowns," Dr James Fokinther, Dentist at Lawton Dental Care explained.

"These can help restore strength and function, while their smooth surfaces can also make it easier to clean between the teeth."

A healthier smile for the future

For the team at Lawton Dental Care, good dentistry is about building relationships, understanding individual needs and helping patients maintain healthy smiles for years to come.

"Prevention is about giving patients the knowledge to make confident decisions about their care, rather than feeling they are only visiting the dentist when something hurts or breaks." Dr Matt Gilks added.
