An Alsager vet has shared her love of exotic animals and revealed there's so much more we can for them.

Veterinary surgeon Becky from Vets4Pets in Alsager is passionate about exotic pets.

Animals classed as exotic are pets such as guinea pigs, rats, mice, birds and reptiles. These pets have a diverse and often complex range of needs.

"I love treating a variety of species, whether it's a cat or a tortoise, and I have a special interest in exotics," she said.

Becky has seen a wide range of exotic pets during her career, including a sick tortoise with a cloacal prolapse, an African grey parrot in respiratory distress, a guinea pig with an overactive thyroid, hamster with a cheek pouch impaction and many more.

She added: "There is a lot more we can do to help our exotic species than many realise- sometimes even helping someone adapt their husbandry or adding in pain relief to help an older patient with chronic conditions can have a really positive impact on the quality of life for these guys- it's all about what works for the owner and their pet."

Becky, who has a hamster, several guinea pigs, a leopard gecko and a tortoise advises that if you are thinking of keeping an exotic pet, it is important to seek out advice and do your research first.

"Exotic pets require extra care and it is really important that owners have good husbandry (providing the correct enclosure, diet and care) for their specific species to meet their needs." she said.

"You can find plenty of pet advice on the Vets 4 Pets website, at vets4pets.com/pet-advice. You can also follow the practice on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest practice news and for helpful pet advice."
