Many people are rethinking Christmas gifting this year and local travel specialist Sara Dickenson is encouraging residents to swap wrapped presents for unforgettable experiences.

When we met with Sara, who supports clients in Alsager and across the surrounding area, she shared a moment that completely reshaped her own approach to Christmas.

"I asked my children what they got for Christmas last year," she told us with a smile. "They couldn't remember a single thing. Not one present. Then I asked them where we went on holiday last year and suddenly they were telling me every detail. What we did, what we saw, how they felt… they remembered everything."

It's a contrast many parents will recognise. Toys break, trends fade, and most gifts lose their novelty within weeks. But experiences? They stay with us.

"That's why I now encourage families to think differently," Sara said. "Book a weekend away. Add an experience to your holiday. Or even gift a holiday itself. These are the things children remember for life."

Sara shared her top experience-based Christmas gifts for children and adults, all inspired by her work as a travel specialist.

Top experience gifts for children

1. Disneyland Paris – The Ultimate Memory Maker

As a specialist in Disney holidays, Sara says Disneyland Paris is a foolproof Christmas gift. "There are so many tips and tricks when booking Disney, which is why using a specialist really helps," she explained. With The World of Frozen opening at the end of March, families can expect magic and storytelling – an experience kids will never forget.

2. A Sunset Pony Ride – Simple, Beautiful Family Time

Sara shared a favourite moment from her own travels: "When we were in Corfu, we took our 13, 11 and seven-year-old children on a sunset pony ride along the coast.

"We had to drag the teenager there," she laughed, "but afterwards he said it was one of the best things we've ever done." They still remember the wildlife, the sea breeze and even the names of their ponies.

"Give your children a voucher for a pony ride during your holiday. It's something truly special."

3. Foreign Currency as a Gift for Older Kids

For pre-teens and teens, Sara suggests a simple but exciting idea: "Gift them a little spending money in the currency of the country you're visiting. It gives them independence, responsibility and something to look forward to."

4. Waterpark Adventures — Especially in Dubai

"There are some incredible waterparks around the world," Sara told us. "One of the most famous is Aquaventure World in Dubai – it's a guaranteed hit for all ages."

Dubai makes an ideal family destination, she explained, and even in the summer: "Because Dubai is built for high temperatures, everything stays comfortable, and prices are much lower."

Top Experience Gifts for Adults

1. A Gig Abroad – Made Effortless

Sara can arrange packages that combine concert tickets, hotels and travel, making it incredibly easy to gift someone the experience of seeing their favourite artist in a completely new city. "It's a brilliant surprise present," she said. "Imagine opening an envelope that says you're going to see your favourite band in Paris or Rome."

2. Completely Bespoke Wellness or Adventure Weekends

If you're looking for something personal, Sara specialises in tailor-made trips. "I've created weekends away with wild swimming, private yoga sessions, sound bathing, hiking, beautiful restaurants – whatever someone dreams of, I can make it happen."

These highly personalised experiences make extraordinary gifts for partners, parents or close friends.

"If you want to give a gift they'll remember next Christmas – and ten Christmases after that – choose an experience," she told us. "Memories last far longer than anything wrapped under the tree."
