Everyone needs a little help from time to time – life can change at the flip of a coin and we don't always have the skills to deal with what's thrown at us.

But there's one organisation in Alsager where the door is always open and confidential free advice is on hand – Alsager Community Support (ACS).

The charity sits in the heart of Alsager at premises above The Vault in Crewe Road, providing professional drop in and telephone support, valuable advice and information free of charge.

ACS's goal is to empower individuals, enabling them to lead more independent, healthier and fulfilling lives and now they are appealing for volunteers to help deliver this.

The charity, awarded the Queen's Award for voluntary service, is actively seeking volunteers with experience in the advice sector, who can share their skills and help local people in navigating the benefit system.

Each year there is £23 billion in support unclaimed (Policy in Practice, 2024), and volunteers can play a crucial role in assisting individuals to access the benefits they are entitled to.

They also have other opportunities available, from befriending to driving.

"So if you're looking for a way to connect with others and give back to your local community, ACS could be the perfect place for you," said a spokesperson.

"Over the years, many volunteers have joined ACS, taking part in the variety of services we offer - from befriending and shopping, to driving residents to local lunch clubs or medical appointments, and guidance and support at the centre, our volunteers play a crucial role in every aspect of the charity work."

One long-standing volunteer John, who has been at ACS for eight years, shared his positive experience of working at the centre.

He said: "I've met some wonderful people over the years, and they're always so grateful for the help they receive from the charity," John explained.

"There's a real sense of satisfaction when someone comes in with a complex issue, and you do your best to find a solution. It's incredibly rewarding."

Pete, who has volunteered with ACS for three years, started as a befriender. After a lifetime of work, he wanted to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.

"Volunteering at ACS has been a rewarding experience," he said. "Befriending has allowed me to meet new people and build upon friendships and help those feeling socially isolated.

"I always look forward to my weekly visits and the great conversations we share."

In the UK, it is estimated 14.2 million people volunteer through a group, club or organisation in 2021/22 (NCVO, 2023).

ACS offers numerous opportunities to make a difference, and in turn, those who give their time and effort find it to be a rewarding experience.
