A teenager from Scholar Green is walking 50 miles from Kidsgrove to Manchester to highlight the climate emergency and remind us that short journeys can be done on foot.

Seventeen-year-old Wolfgang Wood, a student at Reaseheath College in Nantwich, is doing the walk over two days from today (Friday) until Saturday (September 9th).

He is walking along the Gritstone trail and a various canals during the walk from Kidsgrove train station to Manchester Piccadilly.

He said: "A recent BBC article on daily travel impacting the environment shows that, shockingly, 60% of one-to-two-mile journeys are taken by car.

"Cars produce on average produce 180 grams of CO² per kilometre meaning that changing from driving the 1.5-mile journey to walking five days a week would save 70 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year.

"The money donated towards the walk will help with future awareness of greener travel and will be used to support the effort of pressuring local and national authorities to make positive change to public transportation."

Wolfgang founded Cheshire East Young Greens to support the work of the Green Party in and around Cheshire East.

Rich McCarthy, co-chair of Cheshire East Green Party said: "Wolfgang has planned a great, local expedition which both highlights our society's problem with its attitude to and use of transport, and at the same time is an adventure which can be achieved without despoiling the environment or our climate in any way.

"This is definitely a great example of challenging ourselves in a sustainable manner and I'm looking forward to hearing all about the walk once he's had a good sleep afterwards."

Wolfgang has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds from the walk. All money raised will go to the Cheshire East Young Greens' group.
