A new free adventure playground is set to open in unused woodland on the edge of Crewe town centre - thanks to a partnership involving Scholar Green-based Wild Rumpus.
Flag Lane Adventure Playground will be constructed in unused woodland next to Chester Street Car Park and Flag Lane.
Targeted for completion by summer 2024, the development will offer families a safe and challenging environment for children to meet, play freely, learn and access nature and the arts.
Flag Lane Adventure Playground is a project designed and funded in partnership between Wild Rumpus, Flag Lane Baths and Cheshire Wildlife Trust.
The playground is aimed at being a parent-free zone where children have the freedom to choose their play, under the supervision of highly skilled play workers.
Being the first and only adventure playground in the area, it will be a free, after-school provision and open throughout the summer holidays.
There will be weekend open days for parents, carers and younger siblings. Local schools will also be invited to use the space for nature-based activities.
Flag Lane Adventure Playground will have:
- A small securable structure, toilets, basic drinks and cooking facilities
- Small wildlife-themed basic structures built from natural materials
- Loose materials for free play such as bricks, boards, timber posts, planks, and tools
- Designated wildlife areas for more formal, expert-led activities and residencies
- Wildlife cameras installed to capture wildlife and nocturnal animals
The new playground will offer the equivalent of two to three full-time playworker jobs.
There will be ongoing and varied volunteer opportunities for the local community to get involved.
Local residents can have their say on the proposed Flag Lane Adventure Playground at Crewe Market Hall drop-in event on Thursday 7 December, between 10am and 4pm.
Creative Producer at Wild Rumpus, Charlotte Davies, told Nub News: "We are hoping the community will have a huge input into what the space will eventually look like, it is all very open at the moment.
"The drop-in event is a space for people to share what they would like in the playground, there will be a large variety of things."
Wild Rumpus, based at The Whirligig Woods in Lunts Moss, Scholar Green, make and support work, often in green places, that "surprises, inspires and stirs people".
