A retired sports journalist from Alsager has made news himself - after getting a birthday card from King Charles III and the Queen Consort.

Plucky George Court of Joseph Crescent recently celebrated his 100th birthday and was given a special party in the town by his lunch club.

George, who worked for the Manchester Evening Chronicle and has a lifetime membership of the NUJ (National Union of Journalists), is an active member of the community.

Twice a week, the centenarian drives himself to the Alsager Civic Lunch Club who gave him a special celebration for his birthday.

And George, who has fond memories of the printworks in Manchester and his days as a sub editor, is also full of praise for Alsager.

He moved to the town in 2012 from the Manchester area after his wife, Hilda, sadly passed away. He is full of praise for Alsager.

"It's a wonderful place to live and I have settled in well. I moved here to be near friends in Church Lawton and I am so happy here," he said.

George, who was delighted with his birthday card from Charles and Camilla, also received a card from the lunch club.

"I'm so touched. So many people signed it. We had a great time celebrating," he said.

A former Crown Green bowler and table tennis player, George still reads a newspaper every day and has fond memories of newspaper days.

A framed picture hangs in his lounge of his days in journalism and "hot metal memories".

"We had some great times," said George who remembers the many Grand National days and other major horse racing events.

George has been retired for many years and takes everything in his stride.

A popular member of the Alsager Civic Lunch Club, dining room co-ordinator, Judith Aspinall says he is a regular at the club.

"He's such a wonderful gentleman and a popular member" she said. "He's amazing for his age."

But what is the secret of long life for George?

"It's about doing everything in moderation. I don't drink or smoke. I only have soft drinks," says George.

"Nothing in excess. If you look after yourself you will be all right. Just keep active."
