Residents will have to wait another year before 'worst road in any town centre' is repaired

Furious residents will have to wait another year before improvements are made to a road, dubbed the "worst road running through the centre of any town in England" is improved.
Alsager councillor, Rod Fletcher and Alsager Town Clerk, Julie Mason, have both written to Cheshire East Council's highways department asking them to make improvements to Lawton Road.
Cllr Fletcher said: "You may recall the meeting we had at the Asda crossroads in Alsager last September with myself and Councillor Kain where you saw the appalling state of Lawton Road in Alsager.
"Improvements On Lawton Road which run through the centre of Alsager was in the maintenance programme for the last two years.
"You assured Councillor Kain and me that it would be in the 2025/26 programme. The Town Clerk says you have told her it is not in the programme. This must be the worst road running through the centre of any Town in England!
"If this is the case can you please explain why Lawton Road is not in this year's maintenance programme?"

Town Clerk Julie Mason said in her email: "Since being appointed town clerk the standard of the road outside Asda in Alsager has been one of the main areas of complaints.
"It is appalling and in places unsafe for a wheelchair/ pushchair to move across the pedestrian crossing.
"At an annual town meeting in essence it was the main area of dissatisfaction and the Councillors took all the abuse which in essence should have been directed to Cheshire East highways."
Cllr Fletcher was told reply to his member enquiry: "After discussions with the relevant highway teams, I can confirm that the road condition of Lawton Road will be addressed in two phases over the next two years.
"Phase One of Lawton Road will commence this financial year, during which the council will treat the first section of Lawton Road up to Ashmore Lane.
"Further details will be provided as part of this year's Highway Improvement Programme, which will be published in May.
For Phase 2, the area outside Asda will be addressed as part of the pedestrian crossing scheme, which is currently in the design phase this year, with implementation scheduled for next year.
"Until the work on Lawton Road is complete, we will continue to ensure the road's safety in accordance with the council's code of practice by conducting regular inspections and your local highways officer addressing customer enquiries."
Both Cllr Fletcher and the town clerk have pressed Cheshire East to make improvements.
