Primark comments on 'speculation' regarding potential future Crewe store
Primark has commented on 'speculation' regarding a potential future Crewe store - wanted by thousands of local residents.
On Wednesday 29 March, British fashion and homeware retailer, Matalan, was approved for Crewe's Grand Junction Retail Park.
This news came as a big boost to local residents who have lost the likes of clothing stores Topshop, Burton/Dorothy Perkins, Roman Originals and BHS in recent years.
Lots of Crewe residents said they would gave preferred Matalan to be located in Crewe town centre instead.
Nub News reader, Pamela Flaherty, said: "This kind of shop is needed in the town centre instead to increase footfall."
Hundreds of local residents called for a new Primark store in Crewe town centre - believing it would hugely boost the amount of people shopping in the area.
Nub News reader, Claire Louise, said: "I like to shop at Primark and the closest for me is in Hanley.
"When I go to Hanley we usually eat too. If there was a Primark in Crewe I wouldn't need to go to Hanley and that would mean I'd have more money in Crewe.
"Having a Primark would help the town's economy whether you like to shop there or not.
Following the approval of Matalan, Crewe Nub News contacted Primark, asking if it would consider opening in the town centre.
A Primark spokesperson told Nub News:
"We continually review opportunities for expansion of the Primark business.
"However, as you'd expect, we don't comment on speculation about where or when we might open our next stores."
Currently, the closest Primark store to Crewe is in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, 16 miles away. The next nearest is Chester, 24 miles away.
Nub News reader, Rahana Fardous-Ahmed, believed the fast fashion retailer would be a big hit in Crewe - increasing jobs and trade.
She said: "Having a Primark in Crewe would be excellent in creating jobs and business in the town.
"I'm sure a lot of the Crewe community would shop in Primark and find it so much easier instead of travelling all the way to Hanley.
"I know for sure I'd definitely appreciate the convenience of the location and much more variety shopping wise."
If Primark were to consider opening a store in Crewe - the only likely town centre units available would be in the new planned Royal Arcade development.
A new shopping centre alongside leisure units and restaurants, are planned in the £43m scheme - which will begin once the first phase has been completed this December.
Phase two of the Royal Arcade is expected to be completed in Spring 2025 at the earliest.
Nub News reader, Sophie Windley, believes Crewe would need city status to land a Primark store.
She added: "I want a Primark in Crewe but not having a city status, we will never get it.
"Even though rent is expensive they'd certainly make up for it and it would bring plenty of tourism into the town.
"This would then maybe open up to more shops wanting to come here making it a town centre like it is meant to be - not a derelict site."
Crewe Nub News backs local residents ideas for improving the town.
