A notorious stretch of road in Alsager which is so badly damaged with potholes and an uneven surface that it was discussed in Parliament is to be repaired shortly.

Alsager Cheshire East councillor, Rod Fletcher, has had notification that work will be carried out in January.

He said: "After over four years of promises, the provisional date for resurfacing Lawton Road between Wesley Place and Bank Corner is now provisionally proposed for the 14th January 2026."

Cllr Rod Fletcher, who has campaigned strenguously to get the road repaired, wrote to Cheshire East's highways department in October and received a reply with the good news.

"I'm pleased to confirm that the lining works on the previously micro-resurfaced section have now been completed." Cllr Fletcher was told.

"In addition, the resurfacing works for the section between Wesley Place and Bank Corner are provisionally scheduled to commence on 14th January 2026.

"We appreciate your patience while these improvements are carried out and remain committed to delivering a safer and better-quality road surface for all users."

Residents have complained vigorously about the state of Lawton Road in the centre of Alsager so much so that local MP, Sarah Russell raised the subject in the House of Commons.

She said then: "It's a major part of the town centre and the degeneration of the road is making it look less attractive than otherwise it could.

"Do you agree with me that these are important points not just for the state of our roads but for the whole of the local economy?"

I know personally of 2 elderly pedestrians who have fallen as a result of this dangerous section of road. Both women were injured, one seriously. I also know of a road traffic accident where a person was killed, (possibly) as a result of this road surface. Having spent 30 years dealing with the legal profession, I am somewhat concerned that no-one on the relevant committee seems to realise that if the concerned parties decided to take legal action against the council or indeed, whoever is responsible, this could be very, very costly? I would suggest not just negligence but criminal negligence? Judges do not take kindly to 'sloppy' Mayors or Councillors!

This is the piece of road reported as being scheduled for repair in October 2025, then Quarter 3 2025, right?

Hopefully it will not be as poorly done as the rest of Lawton Road and may get some line markings without waiting an eternity…….
