A planning application has been submitted to Cheshire East Council to build 70 affordable homes with car parking, landscaping and public open space in Alsager.
Plus Dane Housing wants to build the development in Linley Road, Alsager.
Several residents have written in to oppose the plan, one asking if core samples of the ground have been taken.
They asks in a letter: "The land was railway sidings and engine sheds etc. thus the earth may be polluted.
"Are the existing drainage systems, already collapsing in places, able to withstand more use?"
The resident goes on to say: "The state of existing roads in the area is already poor and restricted by the railway crossing.
"Schools are already do not have enough space. Alsager has already had a plethora of housing over the last few years and its infrastructure is already under strain."
Network Rail has requested a planning consent be included "to ensure that the construction and subsequent maintenance of the proposal can be carried out without adversely affecting the safety, operational needs or integrity of the railway."
A nature conservation report advises that "the application site is likely to support breeding birds, potentially including more widespread priority bird species, which would be a material consideration for planning.
"The loss of scrub habitats on site is likely to result in a localised adverse impact upon breeding birds. If planning consent is granted it must be ensured that adequate compensatory habitat is provided for the loss of scrub habitat at this site."
The report also asks that removal of any vegetation or the demolition, extension or conversion of buildings doesn't take place between 1st March and 31st August in any year, unless a detailed survey has been carried out to check for nesting birds.
The last date for submitting comments is next Tuesday (July 23rd) and the last date for a decision to be made is August 1st. The planning application can be viewed here
