Three candidates have been named for the upcoming Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner election.

Conservative candidate, John Dwyer is seeking a third term as Cheshire's Police and Crime Commissioner alongside Liberal and Labour candidates.

Mr Dwyer is one of three candidates Alsager and Cheshire residents can vote for on Thursday May 2 alongside the Liberal's candidate, Paul Duffy and the Labour Party's Dan Price.

John Dwyer, who lives near Nantwich, is the current PCC and was elected as Cheshire's first PCC in 2012.

He was unsuccessful in 2016, but in 2021 he took the position back, and hopes to win a third term in office from this May's elections.

More police officers, and better performance are at the crux of Dwyer's campaign, and he wants to make 'Cheshire the safest county in the country'.

"I regained the position in the election of May 2021 since when I have driven tremendous improvements in the performance of the force. The number of officers has increased by almost 300 to 2400," he said.

Dwyer also wants to see the number of Special Constabulary volunteers increase.

He also hopes to oversee the rollout of the 'right care, right person' scheme next year.

Elsewhere, reducing the number of road deaths is also a key target for the Conservative candidate, amongst other points.

"Speed on our roads has been highlighted to me as a problem across the county, and I have therefore been working with Parish and Borough Councils to introduce a network of average speed cameras," he explained.

"I have ensured that rural needs are addressed to reduce the theft of farm plant, machinery and livestock and also given a focus to dealing with fly tipping which, when it occurs, is a blight on our countryside and causes great inconvenience and loss to our farmers.

"The needs of businesses has also been a focus for me, giving them advice as to how to prevent crime, not just shoplifting and theft generally but also cybercrime.

"During my [three-year] term in office I have secured over £14m of Home Office funding to make our streets safer for everyone, but especially for woman and girls.

"I introduced the use of technology in the form of GoodSAM and HollieGuard, installed monitored CCTV cameras in vulnerable areas, developed policies to deal with domestic abuse and led on discussions across the county on honour based abuse including female genital mutilation.

"My record shows I have achieved much more than the snapshot above, but I know there is lots more to do, and my proven track record shows I am the person to achieve it. I want to see even more officers, and even better performance, to help me to make Cheshire the safest county in the country."

Dwyer spent 30 years in the police, his last job was at Cheshire Constabulary, before leaving the force as assistant chief constable. He was based in Nottinghamshire and then the West Midlands, before his days in our county.
