The Mayor of Alsager, Councillor Michael Unett, attended Cheshire East Council's Holocaust Memorial Day service today (Monday) saying "we must always remember, never forget and always stand up to hatred".

Cllr Unett was among local mayors, councillors, representatives, schoolchildren and visitors to attend the event at Crewe Municipal Buildings hosted by the Mayor of Cheshire East.

Real life experiences were shared by a guest speaker from the Northern Holocaust Education Group and from the Leader of Cheshire East Council, Councillor Nick Mannion and the Deputy Leader, Councillor Michael Gorman.

Cllr Unett said on Social Media: "Eighty-one years ago today saw the liberation of Auschwitz. The horrors of the Holocaust took the lives of over six million Jews and others and has had a profound and lasting impact on those who survived and on later generations.

"Holocaust Memorial Day serves as a reminder not only of what happened and those who lost their lives but also that we must continue to honour their memory by never forgetting and ensuring that nothing like this ever happens again."

Why is this news? Is there something you are dog-whistling here about the mayor of Alsager and it is really inappropriate, would the same coverage be given to leaders of the gypsy and traveller community or members of the East Cheshire Pride groups, maybe any of those that of have been politically aboandoned by East Cheshire Labour Party. It is about being proportinate and representing history as facts not a fantasy that excuses one minority of apologies for for world events that are so clearly similar to that of over 80 years ago. This is apologist for those that exploit terror and rage to further a supremacy myth. It detracts from the real meassage that it was the conflation of an exploitative minority with poor neighbours that turned two thirds of a nation against their weakest and poorest.
Soundbites for the promotion of the political profile of any individual is a look at me. I care not the culture heritage or origin of any individual as we are all human, I care when difference is exploited for gain as well as loss.
