Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned today following a series of resignations and a local Liberal Democrat politician says it wasn't unexpected.
But the local politician says it may cause long-term damage and people's attitudes to voting and local democracy may be coloured by what has happened.
And another political figure in Cheshire East says it shouldn't have taken this long and Boris has led us through incompetence, lies and scandal.
Councillor Phil Williams, chair of Congleton Constituency Liberal Democrats and chair of Alsager Town Council said: "The wheels of the Johnson wagon were bound to come off sooner or later.
"The Conservatives elected a good campaigner for sure, but he turned out to be a poor Prime Minister and party leader.
Cllr Phil Williams, current chair of Alsager Town Council
"The mass resignations over the last 24 hours or so show how untenable his position was and how loose a grip he had on the helm.
"My main concerns now are about political instability at a national level and the need to rebuild public trust and confidence in the political process at all levels.
"What happens nationally often colours people's attitudes at regional and local level. It can undermine people's confidence in our hard-won democratic process.
"There are opportunities for the opposition parties of course and I hope that some order can come out of the chaos - much of it of the Prime Minister's own making.
"Whatever our political views, we need to pull together to maintain standards in public life and restore the confidence of the British public. We all deserve better than this."
Cllr Michael Unett, last year's chair of Alsager Town Council
Labour Alsager Town councillor for East ward and chair of Cheshire East's Local Government Committee, Cllr Michael Unett, said: "It right that Boris Johnson has now decided to resign but it shouldn't have taken this long.
"He has led us through incompetence, lies and scandal. His legacy will be as one of the worst Prime Ministers in modern British history.
"The further damaging thing has been that all of this has happened during a cost-of-living crisis.
"The problem is that I don't think a change at the top of one person is what this country needs - Tory MPs including current and resigned Cabinet ministers elected, supported, and propped up Boris Johnson knowing full well who he was and what he had done.
"They are just as responsible for the damage done to the country and the extremely poor standards of government.
"What this country really needs is a complete change of government."
