Passengers in Alsager face disruption this weekend, due to strike action from members of train drivers' union ASLEF.

Walkouts will take place today (Friday 5 April), Saturday 6 April, and Monday 8 April. Strikes will take place for different rail operators on different days.

These are the details so far:

Friday 5 April

  • Avanti West Coast
  • CrossCountry
  • East Midlands Railway
  • West Midlands Trains

Saturday 6 April

  • Chiltern
  • GWR
  • LNER
  • Northern
  • TransPennine

Sunday 7 April will mostly affect Southern and London-based operators.

The industrial action comes as part of a long-running dispute between ASLEF and the rail operators - contracted by the UK government - over pay.

ASLEF has been campaigning for a pay rise for train drivers, in line with inflation and an increased cost of living.

ASLEF general secretary Mick Whelan said: "Many members have now not had a single penny increase in pay for half a decade, during which time inflation has soared and, with it, the cost of living."

Tricia Williams, chief operating officer at Northern, said: "We are disappointed that ASLEF has chosen to call yet more strike action and we would encourage them to work with the rail industry so we can put an end to this dispute.

"We can only apologise to customers in the meantime for the significant disruption and inconvenience this action by ASLEF will cause."
