A retired sports journalist from Alsager has had praise heaped on him by Manchester City players when they discovered he was celebrating his 103rd birthday.

Plucky George Court George, who worked for the Manchester Evening Chronicle many years ago and is an avid Manchester City supporter, received a signed birthday card from the players and photographs of the club.

Friends of George, who attends Alsager Lunch Club twice a week, contacted Manchester City Suppoters' group who stepped in to help celebrate George's big day.

Jo Rogers from the Lunch Club said: "Last autumn I started contacting the Man City supporters group - George is a lifelong supporter and, it turns out, their oldest fan.

"Last month he received a wonderful package from Man City - a card signed by all the players and a beautiful picture which had been specially commissioned commemorating him as their oldest fan.

"We're so grateful for this and delighted he was sent these. George is absolutely thrilled."

George, who worked for the Manchester Evening Chronicle and has a lifetime membership of the NUJ (National Union of Journalists), is an active member of the community.

And George, who has fond memories of the printworks in Manchester and his days as a sub editor, is also full of praise for Alsager.

George moved to Alsager in 2012 from the Manchester area after his wife, Hilda, sadly passed away. He is full of praise for Alsager.

"It's a wonderful place to live and I have settled in well. I moved here to be near friends in Church Lawton and I am so happy here," he said previously.

A former Crown Green bowler and table tennis player, George still reads a newspaper and has fond memories of newspaper days.

A framed picture hangs in his lounge of his days in journalism and "hot metal memories" and now he has pictures of Manchester City to add to his collection.
