From handprints to creativity: how Church Lawton School embraced autism acceptance day in full colour
By The Editor 2nd Apr 2026
Pupils and staff at Church Lawton School came to school in a rainbow of colours to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month.
The school, which supports autistic pupils aged four to 19, held a special "Colour Day" on the last day of term, with everyone choosing their favourite colour to wear.
Pupils also made handprints in different colours which were then used in displays to show everyone's part in the school community.
As part of the celebrations, students have been creating entries inspired by the children's book Wonderfully Wired, which celebrates neurodiverse people who have changed the world.

Charlotte Steele, Autism Lead Practitioner at Church Lawton School, said: "It's been fantastic to see the pupils getting so involved and having fun this week.
"Colour Day was brilliant — everyone looked amazing in their outfits — and the Wonderfully Wired project has given them a chance to be creative while thinking about what makes them unique. The energy and excitement around school has been brilliant to see."
Paul Scales, Principal at Church Lawton School, added: "Autism Acceptance Month is a really important time for our school community, and this week has been a perfect way to celebrate our pupils.
"Seeing them enjoying Colour Day and working on their entries for the trust-wide book has been wonderful — it's a chance for them to be proud of themselves and for us to celebrate what makes each of them special."
