From bookshelf to runway: Alsager volunteer crafts dress from discarded paperbacks
By Deborah Bowyer 6th Mar 2026
World Book Day never fails to deliver and that's exactly what happened in Alsager.
Children across the country headed into school dressed as their favourite book characters yesterday (Thursday)
But in Alsager, we saw literary icons taking on a different meaning in the form of dress made out of unwanted paperbacks.
A talented member of staff at the Dougie Mac shop in Lawton Road, Rita Mason, loves creating eye-catching window displays and this one was particularly creative.
Rita Mason, who volunteers at the shop, a stunning ballgown and matching handbag out of unwanted books.
Last year she created another stunning ballgown (pictured below) for World Book Day but Rita reckons this year's one was even better.
She said: "I really enjoyed making this one. Everything was made from a couple of unwanted paperback books and is photographed multiple times on a daily basis."
World Book Day was created by UNESCO in 1995 with the aim of promoting a love for books and reading.

In the UK, World Book Day is a registered charity and is celebrated on the first Thursday in March.
