Former Conservative MP, Fiona Bruce, who lost her Congleton constituency seat in the General Election, has paid homage to her staff and supporters.

And she has congratulated her Labour successor, Sarah Russell MP who polled 18,875, votes - 3,387 more than Fiona's 15,488 to take the seat. Alsager is part of the Congleton constituency.

"It has been a great honour to represent the people of Congleton constituency in Parliament," said Fiona.

"This is a special place, where people are particularly kind, caring, and generously community minded.

"I have constantly endeavoured, over 14 years, to reciprocate the care and kindness shown to me, especially when people have come to me for help, when they have had nowhere else to turn."

She added: "In this work, I want to thank my remarkably dedicated staff, Stephanie Breadon and Harriet Crompton, who over the whole of that period have worked tirelessly in support of local people.

"I also want to thank the local Conservative councillors and volunteers who supported my campaign.

"I wish my successor well in the coming years in promoting the well being of the good people of Congleton constituency."

Nub News told here how the Conservatives had lost the seat for the first time in its 41-year history.

Bruce became an MP for the Congleton constituency in the 2010 General Election when she polled 23,250 votes, taking over from the previous Conservative MP, Ann Winterton. The Congleton constituency was formed in 1983.
