Gas company bosses have thanked residents for their patience and understanding during a five week project to replace old gas pipes in Alsager.

Several roads in the town are currently closed as part of a £53m project to upgrade around 290km of pipes including ones in Alsager.

Cadent Gas say some of the pipes being replaced in Alsager date back to the 1940s and while operating safely, are starting to show signs of age.

Dan Redmond, Head of Work Management for Cadent, said: "This essential work is part of a major £53m investment this year in the local gas network, to upgrade around 290km of pipes.

"We have a duty to ensure a reliable, safe supply of gas - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - to every home, school, hospital and other buildings connected to the network.

"Some of the pipes we're replacing in Sandbach Road North and Lodge Road date to the 1940s and, while operating safely, have more recently started to show signs of their age - requiring maintenance which disrupts the local road network. Upgrading it brings an end to that.

"This work has been planned in for some time, in liaison with the local highways authority. As the pipe is in the middle of the road, it has required a road closure, with diversions signposted.

"It has been timed for during the school summer holidays in order to minimise disruption.

"I appreciate everyone's patience while we complete this project and hope people understand the importance of it, to keep everyone safe.

"If you smell gas, do not assume it is related to this work - it may not be and needs to be checked. Act immediately and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999, day or night. All calls are recorded and may be monitored."
