Asda in Alsager has struck a deal with Cheshire East Council to make part of Fairview car park in the centre free for two hours.

The supermarket chain has announced that after "several months" of negotiations the short stay car park at Fairview will be free for motorists for two hours from Monday (June 30th).

It means ANPR cameras will be installed to monitor the two hour stay and Asda says the deal has been struck not just to benefit supermarket customers but also help local small businesses.

Robert Capon, Deputy Manager at Asda Alsager said: "I am happy to announce that from Monday 30th June, the short stay car park will be free parking for two hours.

"The very top of the car park, near to the library will stay as pay and display (long stay) this will be enforced by Cheshire East Council.

"The rest of the carpark and also the small car park, opposite Dominoes/vets, will be two hours free parking for everyone.

"There will be ANPR cameras installed soon, to monitor the two hour parking limitation.

"Asda has negotiated this to benefit not just their own customers but also the small businesses, which have been hugely affected since the parking charges were brought in."

A spokesperson from Cheshire East Council confirmed the deal. said: "From Monday (June 30th) shoppers will be able to park for free in a specified area of the car park, up to a maximum of two hours.

"This will be managed using ANPR cameras to ensure that visitors do not overstay and that other shoppers are able to make use of the spaces.

"A larger area of long stay car parking will be available, which will continue to operate as pay and display.

"Updated signs will be put in place over the weekend, and the new arrangements will begin from Monday."
