CrossCountry is advising customers to only travel if necessary due to the extreme heat warnings affecting large parts of England and Wales.

The train operator is also running a reduced service on some routes from yesterday (Wednesday) until today (25 June) and further disruption across the network is possible.

Those with tickets for travel on either Wednesday 24 June or Thursday 25 June can use their ticket at no extra cost to travel on earlier services on the same day.

Alternatively, customers can travel on CrossCountry services tomorrow (Friday 26 June).

Mark Anderson, Customer and Commercial Director at CrossCountry said: "We'll be running services, but there will be widespread disruption.

"Please take care in the heat by bringing water and staying hydrated, check your journey before you travel, and if you can, consider travelling at a cooler time or delaying your trip on Wednesday and Thursday."

Customers should check the CrossCountry website and Journey Planners for the latest travel guidance.

London Northwestern Railway also said they were running a significantly reduced train service on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday due to the heatwave.

Extreme heat can cause rails to expand and buckle so when temperatures reach certain thresholds, trains must run more slowly to keep services safe.

Jonny Wiseman, LNR customer experience and commercial director, said: "With extremely high temperatures forecast over the coming days we will be running a significantly reduced service across our network for safety reasons.

"We advise our customers to check before travelling on Tuesday and to only travel on Wednesday and Thursday if their journey is essential."
