Alsager councillor, Rod Fletcher, has won the first part of a campaign to get improved signage and more long stay spaces in the town's Fairview car park.

Cheshire East Council introduced parking charges across its council-owned car parks in the town in December but Cllr Fletcher pointed out that signage and other issues were confusing for motorists at Fairview.

Cllr Fletcher, one of two councillors representing the town at district level, wrote to Cheshire East Council asking if an additional pay machine for those wanting to stay longer than two hours could be installed.

He also asked if more long stay spaces could be made available at the popular town centre car park which is near Asda.

Now he has received a reply from Cheshire East Council saying his requests would be met.

An email to Cllr Fletcher from Cheshire East says: "A second long-stay machine will add extra resilience to the pay-points, alongside the option to use Ring-Go mobile payment app.

"This will be arranged to coincide with designation of additional long stay bays."

Cllr Fletcher said: "Whilst I was opposed to the introduction of parking charges in Alsager, once Cheshire East decided to impose them, I wanted the introduction to be as smooth as possible,

"Whilst this has not been the case, I do thank the officer concerned for meeting with me to discuss these issues and acceding to these requests made by members of the public.

"However, I still want to see the correct charging times shown on the notice board by the pay machines.

"Forty-three long stay spaces out of around 250 is not enough. They are also making at least one more pay machine available to pay for more than a two hour stay."
