Church Lawton's budding scientists get in inspired in Science Week
By Deborah Bowyer 27th Mar 2026
Church Lawton School, a special school supporting autistic pupils aged 4–19, celebrated Science Week with a variety of engaging activities designed to spark curiosity and creativity.
Secondary pupils marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and International Women's Day by researching and writing about inspirational female scientists.
Their work highlighted figures including Rosalind Franklin, Marie Curie, Irene Joliot Curie, Lise Meitner, Ida Noddack, and Barbara McClintock, exploring achievements in DNA, radioactivity, and genetics.
As part of the week's celebrations, pupils visited the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. They explored the city's key role in scientific and technological innovation, from the first railway connecting Manchester and Liverpool to recent discoveries in carbon science and graphene.
The visit offered students a hands-on way to see how science shapes the world.
Phil Warrilow, Science Lead at Church Lawton School, said: "It was fantastic to see our pupils so engaged and curious about science. Learning about inspirational female scientists and exploring Manchester's scientific history really encouraged them to think creatively and ask questions about the world around them."
Paul Scales, Principal, added: "Science Week gives our pupils the chance to explore STEM subjects in an engaging, creative and fun way. Seeing their enthusiasm and curiosity reminds us why these opportunities are so important for every student."
