Church Lawton School's project to improve facilities and increase specialist places for autistic pupils has begun.

Work has started at the special school for autistic children and young people.

The expansion is designed to improve the quality of the learning environment for pupils, while also increasing capacity to meet growing demand for specialist SEND places in the area.

The development will include a new high-spec food technology room with eight individual cooking stations, a dedicated Independence flat to support life skills teaching and an additional general classroom.

A new staff office space and quiet working areas are also being created, alongside expanded Sixth Form facilities, including a student common room. Some existing areas will be reconfigured as part of the works.

Principal Paul Scales said the project would both improve the educational experience for pupils and allow the school to support more families locally.

"This expansion is a real step forward for our school," he said. "It will give us much better spaces to support pupils as they learn important life skills, become more independent, and prepare for adulthood.

"We're really looking forward to seeing the building come together and the difference it will make for our young people."

He added that the works had been carefully planned.

"We're managing the work carefully so most of the building activity happens during school holidays, to keep disruption to teaching and learning to a minimum."

The build is expected to be completed by October 2026 half term.
