Breaking barriers down: meet the duo opening doors to art access in Alsager
By Deborah Bowyer 5th Apr 2026
Walking into Two Doors Studio in Alsager is like walking into an Aladdin's Cave for art lovers and those seeking a creative experience.
Owners Lorna Plant and Ruthie Williams met at a craft fair a while back and their friendship and talents blossomed into a business which has helped over 300 artists showcase their work.
The creative duo celebrated Two Doors Studio's 10th birthday with a big party and are keen to continue providing a place for local artists to sell their wares and for customers to buy unique pieces of art.
As Lorna, who specialises in felt work and textiles pointed out: "For over 10 years, we are proud to have supported local artists by displaying and selling their work and building a supportive community of artistic talent."
Lorna is a retired gardener and lives in Halmer End while Ruthie was born and bred in Alsager and still lives in the town. In a previous life Ruthie worked at Royal Doulton where she started off her career.

"I always knew I wanted to paint," said Ruthie. "I paint and make all sorts of things for the shop. Lots of people can't believe how much stock we have here."
Some of Ruthie's watercolours are on sale at Two Doors Studio, named because it has two doors - one number 98 and the other 100 - while her custom-made jewellery is also popular in the shop.
"I love experimenting," said Ruthie whose work with Royal Doulton has been spotted in the area. "I was at Dagfields once and picked up an item which had my initials on it so I knew it was one I had done.."
Customers come from far an wide to shop at Two Doors Studio - from other parts of Cheshire and sometimes further afield - mainly down to the uniqueness of what's on sale at Two Doors Studio.
Lorna said: "We find that people like coming in to browse as art is such a tactile thing. People want to pick things up and feel the weight.
"Art and craft is good for your mind and health," said Lorna. "We enjoy providing a place for artists to display their work. We have such a creative community."
As well as jewellery, cards and many other items on sale, the shop is also home to work by regular artist Ian Pearsall, whose current exhibition, 'City of Fire and Beautiful Bricks', depicts various scenes around the Potteries.
"We're very lucky to have Ian's work and his support and also that of our landlord, Alex Hough, who wanted the building to be used as a community art space," said Lorna.
Two Doors Studio also runs various workshops. Details of these plus opening times are available on the website here
