An Alsager school has launched an on-going project to improve their outdoor space and get children to enjoy quality time outside.

Headteacher of Highfields Primary School in Alsager, Rachel Woollam, is spearheading a project to make the outdoor space more inviting.

And Rachel, who worked at Rode Heath Primary School before taking over the helm in 2021, says the school is on track with the project.

It will include a 'daily mile track' as well as various break-out areas as well as areas to encourage pupils to learn gardening skills.

The project was given a boost recently with a donation from Alsager Round Table as well as donations from staff who took part in this year's Alsager 5 road race.

"Getting healthier and fitter is one of our priorities here. A healthy body means a healthy mind," she said.

"Children love spending time outside and our aim is to improve the outside area. We've worked hard improving inside now it's time for the outside.

"We have a great space outside and we want to make the most of it. The work will include the annex as well."

The headteacher says some children are still making up for the impact Covid and lockdowns had on learning.

"It's about communicating again and reinforcing our core values and principles."

On 4th February, several members of staff ran the 'Alsager 5' road race to raise funds for the project.

They launched a Justgiving page for the event which has already raised £1,000 and funds are still coming in. The link to donate is here
