Allotment owners in Alsager showed off the fruits of their labour and enjoyed passing on some tips at an open weekend.

Alsager Gardens Association threw open the doors at the town's four allotments so garden lovers could see the flowers, vegetables and plants grown.

Visitors had a look around the different sites at Lawton Road (off Percy James Close), Cedar Avenue, Talke Road and Coronation Avenue.

And they will get another chance to visit the Cedar Avenue allotments when they will be open again on June 5th from 2pm - 4pm to celebrate the Queen's jubilee with a garden party.

Hilary Robinson, Alsager Gardens Association's membership secretary said: "I try to grow unusual vegetables which you can't find in the supermarket such as Yacon, a South American root vegetable.

"During the first lockdown, the allotments were a real bonus as we could come down and chat at a distance to others.

"It's such a great hobby as you get fresh air, exercise and company and there's always something to look forward to as you see things growing and taking shape."

The benefits to well-being of gardening are well-proven, not only for its exercise but for mental well-being.

A report in the Mental Health Journal has cited gardening as helping to reduce stress and improve mood.

Today (Monday) marks the start of Mental Awareness Week which runs until Sunday (May 15th).
