Artistry thrives: artists and creativity light up Wednesday afternoons at Alsager Guide Hall
By Deborah Bowyer 29th Mar 2026
It's Wednesday afternoon and a room at the Guide Hall in Cedar Avenue is awash with artists and activity belonging to Alsager Arts Association.
There's someone working with oils while another person is busily completing a charcoal and chalk sketch of a cat while another artist is is doing a water colour of a scene in the Lake District.
Each table has artists busily working away and sharing tips and ideas with others around them are doing the same with a break in between for refreshments and hot cross buns.
Everyone is happy and it's a very welcoming atmosphere where members leave their worries behind and devote the two hour session to their work.

Alsager Arts Association (AAA for short), was formed in 1988 and now has 34 or more members who each come along to the weekday sessions at the Guide Hall and evening sessions at Alsager Civic.
The chatter is infectious and so too is the artistic work being done at the Wednesday sessions.
Maria Mottershead is chair while Sue Jones is treasurer and both love the artistic work done at AAA.
"It keeps the brain alive and is both mentally stimulating too. We organise trips out and encourage members to express themselves in whatever medium they want," said Maria, who like Sue is a retired nurse."
Maria is in her fourth year of being a member of AAA while Sue has been a member for the past five years.

"We have all sorts of materials and encourage our members to try out different mediums."
Members often take photographs of what they have seen and sketch and paint from those exhibiting work at places like Rode Hall and Barthomley fete.
"We're happy to share our experience and skills in a wide range of mediums. We hold regular demonstrations and workshops by professional artists and members to challenge ourselves and learn new techniques.
"We welcome new members of all abilities from the complete beginner to the more experienced artist."
