An Alsager vet flies out to the Caribbean tomorrow (Saturday) - to help animals injured when a hurricane struck their island.

Amy Dronfield, who has worked in Alsager for the past two years, is volunteering her services at the Carriacou Animal Hospital on Carriacou island part of Grenada.

The 27-year-old, who qualified as a vet three years ago, originally planned to do charity work at the animal hospital but this has now turned into a disaster mission.

And Amy has launched a GoFundMe Appeal to raise money to buy supplies such as syringes needles, IV catheters, bandage materials and other items.

The storm, at the beginning of July, caused near total destruction on Carriacou, killing at least two people, destroying the communication system, damaging hundreds of yachts, fishing vessels and ferries.

Amy is volunteering her skills for injured animals on the island of Carriacou island in the West Indies.

Amy said: "What was originally planned to be some chilled charity work, has now turned into a disaster relief trip.

"Most buildings have been flattened, people and animals injured. The veterinary hospital has lost its roof, the clinic was flooded and they are in desperate need of supplies.

"As things stand, on the day of my arrival I will be only one of two qualified vets on the island.

"If anyone would like to donate, I am going to take with me as many supplies as I can. This money will be used to purchase these supplies or be given directly to the charity."

Already, Amy's GoFundMe appeal has raised £1,154 and donations are still coming in to help provide supplies for the sick and injured animals. The fund is still open and donations can be made here

"All donations will be used to either directly purchase these items for Amy to take with her, or will be given straight to the charity. Anything you can give will be so appreciated," Amy added.
