Alsager Town Councillor lodges petition calling for Cheshire East to install Crewe Road crossing by September

By Tom Avery 25th Apr 2021

A town councillor has lodged a petition calling on Cheshire East to install a zebra crossing in Alsager by no later than 1st September.

Cheshire East Council plans to install a zebra crossing on Crewe Road, near the junction with Cranberry Lane, using both section 106 money from the housing developments at Goss Place and from the Sustainable Modes of Transport to School fund.

Alsager Town Councillor Sue Helliwell has urged Cheshire East to "use their power".

The petition by Cllr Helliwell states: "We [residents] are disappointed that, despite assurances that works would be completed by the end of February 2021.

"Cheshire East Council continues to fail to install the zebra crossing on the Crewe Road near to the junction with Cranberry Lane, which is vitally needed to ensure that children can cross safely to get to Cranberry Academy.

"We call on Cheshire East Council to ensure that the crossing is installed and in working order by no later than 1st September 2021."

The petition was set up following Nub News' article this week that an installation date for the zebra crossing remained unknown as Cheshire East assessed the overall costs for the scheme.

Nub News reported last month that the council had received some comments from residents, but they were reportedly in a position to proceed with the installation once final costs had been approved and a new date was agreed for the work to be carried out.

However, Cheshire East has now confirmed that an installation date for the crossing is no nearer to being finalised and the national lockdowns have "delayed progress".

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson told Nub News: "Cheshire East highways are currently assessing overall costs for this scheme and a final budget will need to be formally approved before a new date is fixed for the installation of this crossing.

"Unfortunately, the impacts of Covid during the winter and early spring have delayed progress on this particular project."
