Alsager Town Council chairman says 'no' to proposed parking charges
Alsager Town Council chairman, Councillor Michael Unett, has thrown his weight behind the campaign to stop car parking charges being introduced in the town.
Cllr Unett is speaking about the introduction of car parking charges on behalf of the Town Council at tomorrow's Cheshire East Council highways and transport committee meeting.
He said : "The current proposals for charges on all of Alsager's Car parks, Fairview, Station Road, Fanny's Croft and Well Lane are unfair and fail to take into account the circumstances of our town and the overwhelming view from Alsager residents against any introduction of charges.
"Our high street relies on Fairview car park remaining free as well as this car park being a pick-up and drop off point for Highfields Primary School. Issues with on-street parking will only get worse with charges introduced on other car parks.
"Fairness across the borough is one of the reasons for these changes but is all very good when there are other towns due to receive investment and regeneration or are larger and have more car parks.
"Other towns such as Crewe, Congleton and Sandbach will all still have free car parking alternatives – Alsager will have none. This is not fairness.
Cllr Unett is urging residents to email the members of the council's highways and transport committee meeting debating the issue tomorrow and also sign the "No to Car Parking Charges in Alsager" petition launched in the town.
You can click on the petition here. "Only together can we stop car parking charges coming to Alsager." said Cllr Unett who will be attending tomorrow's meeting. The report to go before tomorrow's committee states: "For historic reasons, the borough has operated with inconsistent car parking tariffs and charging mechanisms, with some places still providing free car parking. "These arrangements are unfair and represent a significant opportunity in relation to the revenue that could be created to support the strategic transport and highway related objectives of the council." The new pay and display policy, if approved, will see zonal tariffs introduced.
