A petition to 'SAVE ALSAGER TIP' reached 1000 signatures on Friday.

Last week, Alsager Nub News reported on local politician Michael Unett speaking out on a potential sub-option to Cheshire East Council household waste recycling centre (HWRC) changes, that could see Alsager tip close.

A question of the now-shut HWRC consultation, flirted with the idea of a potential closure at Alsager tip in favour of a new tip at Congleton.

Congleton hasn't had a tip since September 2021, but could get a new one at the expense of Alsager.

Alsager residents are being urged to sign a petition calling on Cheshire East Council to dump possible plans to close their tip so it can fund a new site at Congleton (Google).

This is despite reports in May 2021 confirming that Congleton will not get a replacement facility.

Since then, three Cheshire East Council tips have closed.

This month, tips at Poynton, Middlewich and Bollington shut down.

And Alsager residents are determined that Alsager does not join them, with the majority of the petition's 1011 signatures coming in the last seven days.

Michael Unett said on the change.org page: "Alsager has a well-established Household Waste Recycling Centre with usage figures and annual tonnage throughput that place it in the top 4 core sites in Cheshire East.

"Cheshire East Council has consulted on its Household Waste Recycling Centre provision with the option to keep 4 core sites open, including Alsager. However, a sub-option for consultation and consideration by Cheshire East Council is the replacement of Alsager's HWRC with a new site in Congleton. This is due to be considered at the Environment & Communities Committee Meeting of Cheshire East Council on September 26th. Alsager doesn't deserve to potentially lose its HWRC to pay for a new one in Congleton.

"Congleton's closure was due to the sell off of the former site's land by Congleton Borough Council, and then the subsequent refusal of the private landowner to renew the lease with Congleton Borough Council's successor, Cheshire East Council a few years ago. Alsager's HWRC is vital for our community, providing an essential service that helps us manage our waste responsibly and sustainably.

"Closing this facility in favour of a new one in Congleton would not only inconvenience residents but also create significant risks for Cheshire East Council in acquiring a new site, ensuring there was the right permissions to operate a new site and the affordability of a new site, with the sub-option not costed within the current Cheshire East Council Medium-Term Financial Strategy.

"We the undersigned call upon Cheshire East Council to reject the sub-option of replacing Alsager's HWRC with a new one in Congleton, and keep Alsager's HWRC open as one of Cheshire East's core sites.

"Please sign this petition to keep our household waste recycling centre open!"

The petition can be signed on this link.

Cheshire East Council has been contacted for comment.

Cheshire East Council confirmed they would not be making a comment, however, stated that "Final recommendations for the longer-term provision of HWRCs in Cheshire East will be considered at a meeting of the council's environment and communities committee in September."
