Alsager School is launching a new club for students interested in a career in the skies.

Physics teacher and private pilot, Dr Gavin Hammond, will be running sessions for Alsager Sixth Form College for those interested in aviation careers, such as pilot, air-traffic controller and RAF personnel.

Dr Hammond achieved his Private Pilots licence at Shropshire Aero Club at the end of last year and now he's hoping to pass on some of his knowledge to sixth-form students.

Based on his own pilot training, from September Dr Hammond will be providing a fortnightly insights into the ground school aspects of flying, including navigation, meteorology, radio communication and flight planning.

Guidance will also be provided to students applying for pilot training schemes like the British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy.

Students will also have an opportunity to take a trial flight with a qualified instructor at Shropshire Aero Club.

Dr Hammond said: "We're delighted to broaden our offering of societies for our Alsager Sixth Form College students and support even more career path aspirations. I look forward to welcoming the next generation of aviators in September."
