Alsager resident reflects on the changing face of the town since he moved here 30 years ago

An Alsager resident who's lived in the town for the last 30 years says his shopping habits have changed since Cheshire East Council introduced parking charges on council owned car parks and the opening of out of town supermarket.
Retired sales professional, Antony Parvin, says he's now not going into the centre of Alsager due to a combination of reasons.
And he reacted to the closure of Alsager's 'From Me to You' card shop as we revealed here saying he is now shopping elsewhere for greeting cards.

"I've only been into Alsager maybe three or four times since the charges were introduced. I've almost completely stopped using Asda for last-minute top-up shopping, which used to be a regular stop for me," said Antony.
"As for the card shop – yes, that used to be my first choice, but now I tend to go elsewhere for cards, including the new Sainsbury's, which has a good range of greetings cards.
"I don't think the opening of Sainsbury's was the reason I started shopping out of town, but it happened to open around the same time the parking charges came in – and it's now become a regular "call into Sainsbury's" instead of what would have been "call into Asda on the way to or from Alsager."

He added: "Personally, it's not just changed my shopping habits – it's changed my way of life. Alsager used to be a little town centre I'd often visit, maybe even pop in for a coffee or a beer at one of the pubs.
"These days, because of the parking charges, I rarely go down there at all. Even a trip to the barber now depends on finding a free parking space outside – otherwise, it's just not worth it.

"The new charges from May 26th have only made things worse.
"I know many others who feel the same – the charges are putting people off coming into Alsager, and pushing them toward neighbouring towns or bigger stores with free parking. It's really sad. "
