Alsager primary school given go-ahead to build car park on ornamental grass area

Local News by Deborah Bowyer 28th Jan 2026

Cranberry Academy in Alsager has been given the go-ahead to build a car park on an ornamental grass area.

The school applied to build a 10 bay asphalt surfaced car park area amd Cheshire East Council has given approval for the scheme here with conditions.

These conditions include using materials in strict accordance with those specified in the application unless different materials are first agreed in writing and a biodiversity gain plan has to be submitted and approved before work starts.

Present parking arrangements consist of three main areas with a combined total of approximately 24 designated parking spaces which are situated at the front of the Academy's main buildings.

The school said in their plannning application: "The Academy has looked to increase parking elsewhere on-site which has been ruled out due to the following: pupil safeguarding issues, tree locations and other on-site constraints eg site topography and loss of a more favourable ecological habitat.

"The Academy has a policy of encouraging staff to share a lift, use public transport or walk were possible to work.

"The existing on-site parking provision are insufficient for the existing staff numbers, visitors and possible work contractors.

"This results in vehicles parking on local highways which creates congestion, this increases during collection and drop off times. Vehicles that park on the local highway create tension with residents and drivers. "
