Alsager nature walk takes place this weekend

Have you always wondered what plants are called and what wildlife is around when you walk around Alsager?

A group set up to further nature and wildlife in the town is launching a new initiative to help people understand the world around them in Alsager.

Alsager resident, Antony Cook, set up Alsager Urban Wildlife Initiative four years ago and on Sunday (August 7th) he will be holding the first of a new group of walks.

Anyone is invited to go along on Sunday and take part in a "friendly" stroll around the town beginning at Milton Park.

The group will then walk near the railway line out towards 'the spink' – an ancient woodland full of flora and fauna.

Antony said: There's lots of different habitats to explore and we will take it as it comes. It's a friendly stroll around the area taking in the nature.

"We will be focusing on whatever we see which at this time of year will probably be wildflowers and butterflies.

"There's no fixed agenda and we hope this will become a regular walk. It's a chance to meet like-minded people and focus on whatever we see."

The group is meeting at the rose garden in Milton Park at 3 pm and people attending are urged to wear suitable clothing for walking and the weather.

Alsager Urban Wildlife Initiative's mission is to ensure nature and wildlife have a place in the  town.

"Our vision is of Alsager as a town in which wildlife can thrive, both for its own sake and to gladden the hearts of the residents.

"We think of Alsager as a leafy town with green spaces, but as time goes on, it becomes less hospitable for wildlife.

"There are many ways we can help nature, by making our gardens and our town more hospitable for wildlife," they say.

"Alsager Urban Wildlife Initiative group plans to organise various projects which will benefit nature, from planting for pollinators and other invertebrates, to providing nesting boxes for various birds, and helping improve hedgehog habitats."
