Local MP, Sarah Russell, is calling on Cheshire East Council to make safety improvements to the route for children walking from Rode Heath to Alsager School.

Congleton MP, Sarah Russell, whose constituency includes Alsager, said the school bus should not be withdrawn until either an alternative safe transport arrangement can be made or infrastructure improved.

Her comments come after she joined parents and carers on a march along the route today (Monday) following the news that the school bus service was being axed.

Sarah said: "Cheshire East are saying that the addition of an island on the A50 means that this bus route has been reviewed.

"That island is between two junctions on a very fast road, and is poorly lit – the signage and visibility for drivers turning into the road is inadequate, and it is very complex for pedestrians to navigate.

"This is not a safe crossing - nor is the Crewe Road junction. We had 19 road deaths in the constituency from 2019 to 2024. Road deaths are avoidable. You are six times more likely to be killed on a rural road than a motorway."

She added: "The government has set a target of a 70 per cent reduction in the number of children (under 16) killed or seriously injured on roads in Great Britain by 2035.

"Cheshire East has been given increased road budget by the government to spend on both maintenance and safety, which they control decision-making over.

"The bus should not be withdrawn until either an alternative safe transport arrangement can be made, or the infrastructure is improved to the point of safety."

Councillor Emma Gilman, Cheshire East Council's cabinet member for education, special educational needs and disabilities, said previously: "We understand that the removal of two school transport routes will be concerning for some families and may affect their daily arrangements.

"Following highway improvements and a detailed safety assessment, both routes have been confirmed as available walking routes within the statutory distance."

She added: "The safety of children remains the council's top priority. We will continue to work with families, schools and transport providers to ensure clear information is shared in order for families to plan for September 2026."
