An Alsager man has been jailed after he strangled a woman in Stoke-on-Trent and threatened her not to report what happened.

Lloyd McNicholas, from Alsager, was jailed for two-years-and-three-months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday (9 March) after he admitted intentional strangulation and intimidating a witness / juror.

It comes after an argument broke out between 33-year-old McNicholas and the victim at her home in Smallthorne on 29 August last year.

Staffordshire Police explained that "McNicholas strangled the victim until she almost lost consciousness".

On 4 September, he then threatened the victim not to report what had happened to her.

McNicholas was arrested and despite claiming he had done nothing wrong when interviewed in custody, he later admitted the offences in court.

Detective Constable Jessica Hill, of the public protection unit, said: "McNicholas subjected his victim to a violent and spontaneous attack, before threatening more violence if she told us what had happened.

"I hope this sentencing shows that we are committed to protecting victims and are here to support you if you're ready to talk to us."
