Alsager Library celebrates 50th anniversary

This October saw Alsager Library celebrate its 50-year anniversary of its official opening.

Here is a little historical timeline on how Alsager Library was built:

1965

Alsager Library is run from a wooden hut, but the Area Library Committee recommend a new building.

1966-67

Potential sites are identified and investigated and feasibility tests take place on both sites.

1968

  1. 189 acres of land is purchased on Sandbach Road North, but the project is delayed by a lack of capital funding.

The County Architect submits plans for a two-storey 5,000 square ft building with a garage for the mobile library.

1969

A.V Shenton awarded the tender to build new library at a cost of £40,604.

Work begins on site in May, and by November the brickwork reaches roof level.

Target completion date March 1970.

1970

Completion delayed by strike action affecting the supply of glass.

Fixtures and fittings by Scott-Smith and Terrapin-Reska complete by July.

Library opens to the public on 25 September and the opening ceremony by Lord Wooley takes place on the evening of 15 October.

An exhibition of handicrafts by Alsager College Students features on BBC2.

Within six months, book issues went up by 50%, in 1971/72 they went up again by 22%.

From July 1972, a mobile library began serving the surrounding rural areas.
