Former Cheshire East Councillor and Alsager Town Council Chair, Philip Williams, is standing as the Liberal Democrat councillor in the Alsager East by-election to be held on 5th June.

Mr Williams served on Alsager Town Council for eight years and on Cheshire East Council from 2019 to 2023. He was Chair of Alsager Town Council from 2022 to 2023.

He said: 'I stepped aside from local politics to concentrate on other interests but feel that the time is right to stand again and to put my experience to good use.

"A number of Labour councillors have stood down or been dismissed in Alsager East Ward recently, leading to repeated by-elections at considerable expense to the tax-payer.

"The people of Alsager East deserve to be represented by someone committed to staying the course and with a sound track-record at town and borough level."

During his time on Alsager Town and Cheshire East councils, Philip Williams took a lead on improvements to the Hassall Road Play Area and the introduction of play-equipment for children with disabilities in Milton Park.

He promises to work with other councillors on any initiatives to improve parks and open spaces in Alsager East.

"I am very much a team player and believe in consensus and co-operation, irrespective of party politics," he said.

"I have strong political convictions and values of course, but first and foremost believe in representing all sections of the community fairly and equitably."

Mr Williams served on the Strategic Planning Board and Highways Committee on Cheshire East and consistently opposed the introduction of car-parking charges.

"'The Labour-led administration's introduction of car-parking charges across Cheshire East has been disastrous for our own and other communities," he said.

"We can't roll back that misguided decision but Alsager town councillors can represent residents to maintain pressure on the local authority on this and other Highways issues.

"I would lend my weight to Alsager Town Council bringing my experience to bear on issues that affect our community.

"As a former Chair of Alsager Town Council and a volunteer on various community schemes, I am very aware of the key role that voluntary groups play in our community," he said.

"It is very much the role of town and parish councils to support these initiatives. I would do what I can to encourage and support collaboration between the town council and community groups for the benefit of the town.

"During my year as Chair of the Town Council I was struck by how well regarded Alsager is across the region for the quality of its community events and the vibrancy of its voluntary sector. This is a core part of our town's identity and deserves to be promoted, preserved and enhanced."

Outside of local politics, Mr Williams is involved in the local poetry scene and has published two collections of verse by writers from across the region. He is an active volunteer with an initiative to support lonely or house-bound people.

"I was once described as a "Go-To" councillor by someone from a different political persuasion to my own," he said.

"If elected,I would seek to live up to that reputation and represent all residents of Alsager East whichever candidate or party they vote for or irrespective of whether they vote at all. The community must come first in all of this."
